any one of the numerous functional units of the kidney, serving to filter waste matter from the blood. A nephron consists of a Bowman's capsule, glomerulus, and tubule. »

The rat kidney normally contains 32,000 nephrons, the human kidney contains about 1 million (Richard J. Goss).
